Following our meeting with Juanita Batzibal, we headed out for lunch and looked around the city a little on the way.
A street near our hostel in Guatemala City as we head out for lunch. There is an amazing number of buses in Guatemala City.
Most families cannot afford to own cars, so bus transportation is an economical alternative.
People often swing from the door and hop off or on as the bus is moving.

The drinks are still
sold in returnable bottles, although you can also find them in
aluminum cans. If you buy one, you are expected to drink it while standing there.
If you wish to take it with you, you must pay extra for
the bottle.

As we walked around, the security bars on the shops were a constant reminder of
the extremely high crime rate in Guatemala City. Most of the
owner-operated shops had security bars to prevent customers from reaching into
the shop. You hand your money through the bars and they hand you back your
purchases. Even the local laundry operated this way.
